Bush Commutes Sentences Of Two Texas Border Agents

President Bush just commuted the sentences of 2 Texas Border agents who were, in many minds, unfairly tried and convicted for doing their jobs. The two shot a fleeing drug-dealer as he fled across the Texas border into Mexico. U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands, was among the many asking President Bush one last time to commute the federal prison sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean.

“These officers made mistakes, but their sentences were far too harsh. They have served enough time for their convictions,” Brady said. “Law enforcement officers have incredibly tough jobs protecting us. It simply isn’t fair to subject them to a mandatory minimum sentencing requirement for using a firearm when we gave it them to protect our families.”

Ramos and Compean were serving 11- and 12-year sentences, respectively, for the shooting of an illegal alien drug smuggler near the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas. Ten years of each of their harsh sentences are tied to a federal mandatory minimum sentencing requirement. The imposition of an additional 10 years for use of a firearm during a crime was meant to deter criminals, not to jail hardworking law enforcement officers who made a split-second, on-duty decision to use their firearm in pursuit of a criminal they believed to be violent and dangerous, Brady said.

“No matter how anyone feels about the mistakes that these agents made, an additional 10-year federal sentence for using a firearm was clearly excessive,” he said. “President Bush needs to relieve these officers of the remainder of their sentences.”

Brady previously introduced legislation, supported by the Federal Hispanic Law Enforcement Officers Association and Friends of the Border Patrol, which would adjust the current law to prevent this from happening in the future. Ramos and Compeon could still receive a full pardon from Bush…but their families have to be overjoyed with this news.
