NY: Many City Residents Brace For Service Cuts

City residents have mixed reactions to the mayor’s so-called “doomsday” budget, which will plug a $4 billion deficit by reducing funding to services like public libraries, in addition to shrinking the city’s workforce and possibly raising taxes.

On Friday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg pledged to make cuts in the 2009-2010 fiscal year to fill the city’s deficit, which has ballooned from just over a billion dollars only a few months ago, largely due to the financial downturn at Wall Street.

Bloomberg said without increased federal or state aid, the city could be forced to cut about 23,000 jobs through layoffs and attrition, with many job cuts coming from the public school system……
